What it costs to live in Singapore

Source-reviewed on 2026-08-25. Cost ranges are monthly market ranges in SGD for one person in Singapore; official housing, healthcare, driving and Sri Lankan mission sources were checked, while city rents and groceries remain market estimates from current public market data.

What the work pays

Rent is most of the difference between one city and the next, and it moves further than salaries do. Read the rent line first.

What you need in hand on day one

This is cash needed before the first salary cycle clears. Many arrivals wait two pay cycles before their budget feels normal.

Day-one costs breakdown

Before your first payslip

SGD 8,280 - 15,900

Rental bond or security deposit: SGD 5,000 - 8,000
Rent in advance

Getting a lease with no local rental history

Check whether the room is HDB or private, the minimum rental period, and whether the agent represents you or the landlord. Never pay before a viewing or trusted inspection, and insist on the deposit receipt or registered-contract proof used in that country.

Housing details

What they will ask for

Check whether the room is HDB or private, the minimum rental period, and whether the agent represents you or the landlord.
Passport, visa or residence permit, and a local phone number
Proof of income, employment letter, enrolment letter or sponsor guarantee
Local references, rental history or a guarantor where the market expects one

What you can offer instead

A destination-specific explanation letter that names the visa, start date, income and why you lack local history

Bank account, tax number, health cover

Each of these is documented on its own government page. What none of them says is which one holds up the others, which is the only part that costs you money.

Setup steps

Step 1Same day.
Get a local mobile number
Use your passport to get a prepaid SIM first, because banks and landlords will ask for a local number.
Holds up: Bank OTPs, rental applications and delivery accounts.
Step 2Same day to two weeks.

Healthcare before you qualify for anything

Check exclusions before travel. Dental, pregnancy, mental health and pre-existing conditions are the usual places where a cheap policy fails.

Healthcare details

The public system

Public hospitals plus mandatory schemes for locals; foreigners rely on employer, student or private insurance.

The gap before it covers you

Temporary residents do not get citizen-style MediShield protection, so insurance has to be arranged directly.

⚠ Cover you must hold

Employers or institutions commonly require medical insurance for pass holders.

What you pay meanwhile

A private GP or clinic visit without useful insurance can be about SGD 40 - 100.

Sending money to Sri Lanka

Compare the final rupees received, not the advertised fee. A zero-fee transfer can still be expensive if the exchange rate is poor.

Remittance details

What it actually costs

Plan for around 1 - 3% once the transfer fee and exchange-rate margin are both counted.

Receiving it in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan banks can receive foreign earnings into foreign-currency accounts such as NRFC where eligible. Open or update the account while you are still in Sri Lanka if possible.

Your Sri Lankan driving licence

Sri Lankan licences are generally treated as non-exchange or limited-exchange licences unless the destination authority says otherwise; carry an International Driving Permit or certified translation for the visitor period.

Driving licence details

How long you can drive on it

The grace period depends on visa class, state, province or residence status. Check the linked authority before buying or renting a car.

Converting it

Expect identity checks, eyesight checks and often a theory and practical test. Direct conversion should be assumed unavailable unless the linked authority lists Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan community

Worth knowing for its own sake, and worth knowing for the grocery line above: being able to cook what you actually eat moves a food budget more than any other single decision.

Community details

Central Singapore
Where people live
- Little India
- Serangoon
- Toa Payoh
Groceries
- Sri Lankan or South Asian grocers are usually clustered near these neighbourhoods.
- If a named Sri Lankan shop is not visible, search for Indian grocery stores first.
Places of worship

Where this came from

Rents and fees move. Check the source before anything you are about to pay for.

These costs only mean something next to what you would earn, or what the visa asks you to show.
