What it costs to live in Saudi Arabia

Source-reviewed on 2026-08-25. Cost ranges are monthly market ranges in SAR for one person in Saudi Arabia; official housing, healthcare, driving and Sri Lankan mission sources were checked, while city rents and groceries remain market estimates from current public market data.

Rent is most of the difference between one city and the next, and it moves further than salaries do. Read the rent line first.

Getting a lease with no local rental history

Employer-provided housing is common; private rentals should have the contract registered on Ejar. Never pay before a viewing or trusted inspection, and insist on the deposit receipt or registered-contract proof used in that country.

Housing details

What they will ask for

Employer-provided housing is common; private rentals should have the contract registered on Ejar.
Passport, visa or residence permit, and a local phone number
Proof of income, employment letter, enrolment letter or sponsor guarantee
Local references, rental history or a guarantor where the market expects one

What you can offer instead

A destination-specific explanation letter that names the visa, start date, income and why you lack local history
Employer or university letter with start date and income or enrolment details
Recent bank statements showing enough money for several months
A Sri Lankan landlord reference, translated if the landlord asks

Bank account, tax number, health cover

Each of these is documented on its own government page. What none of them says is which one holds up the others, which is the only part that costs you money.

Setup steps

Step 1Often one to four weeks.
Complete employer medical and residence processing
Your employer or sponsor normally starts the residence ID process after arrival.
Holds up: Bank account opening, mobile postpaid plans and many leases.
Step 2Same day to one week after ID documents are ready.
Open a salary bank account
Most banks need passport, visa or residence ID, employer letter and local mobile number.
Holds up: Payroll, remittance setup and card payments.
Step 3Usually tied to the residence ID cycle.
Register health insurance
Employer cover may start only after residence processing. Keep proof of emergency cover for the gap.
Holds up: Non-emergency treatment being affordable.
Step 4Same day for prepaid SIM.
Set up a local mobile number
Use the passport SIM first, then update the account once the residence ID is issued.
Holds up: Bank OTPs, delivery apps and landlord communication.

Healthcare before you qualify for anything

Check exclusions before travel. Dental, pregnancy, mental health and pre-existing conditions are the usual places where a cheap policy fails.

Healthcare details

The public system

Mandatory or employer-linked health insurance plus public/private hospitals for residents.

The gap before it covers you

Sri Lanka has no broad reciprocal-health arrangement here for ordinary temporary migrants; treat public cover as conditional until the local insurer or authority confirms eligibility.

⚠ Cover you must hold

Employer or sponsor medical insurance is normally part of residence processing.

What you pay meanwhile

A private GP or clinic visit without useful insurance can be about SAR 50 - 120.

Sending money to Sri Lanka

Compare the final rupees received, not the advertised fee. A zero-fee transfer can still be expensive if the exchange rate is poor.

Remittance details

What it actually costs

Plan for around 1 - 3% once the transfer fee and exchange-rate margin are both counted.

Receiving it in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan banks can receive foreign earnings into foreign-currency accounts such as NRFC where eligible. Open or update the account while you are still in Sri Lanka if possible.

Your Sri Lankan driving licence

Sri Lankan licences are generally treated as non-exchange or limited-exchange licences unless the destination authority says otherwise; carry an International Driving Permit or certified translation for the visitor period.

Driving licence details

How long you can drive on it

The grace period depends on visa class, state, province or residence status. Check the linked authority before buying or renting a car.

Converting it

Expect identity checks, eyesight checks and often a theory and practical test. Direct conversion should be assumed unavailable unless the linked authority lists Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan community

Worth knowing for its own sake, and worth knowing for the grocery line above: being able to cook what you actually eat moves a food budget more than any other single decision.
